William is a fierce advocate in and out of court who has successfully represented local and national companies in intellectual property litigation and due diligence. William’s practice encompasses various legal services, including litigating disputes, analyzing patent portfolios, providing infringement and validity studies, advising on licensing issues, and performing acquisition due diligence.
His experience in many different industries, including telecommunications, off-road vehicles, wireless communication, power equipment, software, and 3D printing, coupled with his understanding of his client’s technology, provides tremendous leverage in the boardroom and the courtroom.
William works in federal and state courts, appellate courts, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He has experience in critical intellectual property forums such as Virginia, Texas, Florida, Delaware, and the International Trade Commission (ITC).
In addition to his general practice, William has extensive experience with software and computer-related intellectual property, working on matters related to cloud computing, remote access, email transmission, user interfaces, error correction, and frequency hopping. With his background in computer science, William can effectively manage complex technical issues like source code review. He also has experience working with experts, understanding technical standards, and designing infringement tests.
William focuses on providing cost-effective solutions for clients. He has experience winning early resolutions of claims and constraining the cost of litigation with discovery best practices. For example, as counsel for a large Minnesota company, William recently obtained a rare dismissal with prejudice of many of the opposing party’s claims at the initial pleading stage. William prioritizes effective legal briefing and oral argument and has argued numerous motions before the local judges. He excels at economically handling large and small matters and managing sensitive issues like e-discovery.
