About the “Inventor Spotlight” and Carlson Caspers Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives
Carlson Caspers, a top-ranking intellectual property and litigation law firm, celebrates US inventors from diverse backgrounds in a monthly inventor “Diversity Spotlight” on its website.
Attorneys and law students are authors for the unique monthly “Inventor Spotlight” and may serve on Carson Caspers’ Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Tara Norgard and Saukshmya Trichi are co-chairs of the committee that guides the firm’s diversity & inclusion initiatives.
In 2020, Tara Norgard and Jennell Bilek suggested developing a rotating feature on the website that portrays biographies of patent owners who come from diverse communities based on a monthly calendar as an integral program within the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion program. The committee identified the months and dates of established diversity holidays. The volunteers selected the patent owners they wanted to write about for their chosen months.
Carlson Caspers launched the first post in February 2021 with newly designed website pages and a drop-down bar to direct website visitors to the “Diversity Spotlight” series. The website experience includes a home page banner, an overview “Spotlight,” and a bio landing page. Each page links to the firm’s other Diversity & Inclusion program offerings, including the firm’s 1L Scholarship application and the firm’s community involvement page.
Committee members and associates volunteer non-billable hours to participate in the firm’s Diversity Spotlight Series. The series features scientists and inventors within diverse communities and demonstrates the firm’s commitment to Diversity & Inclusion. Volunteers select a month and an individual to write about for the next month’s Spotlight series.
Each “Spotlight” entails selecting a patent owner, researching their contributions, writing the biography, and approving the posted pages on the website after the posts go through an editing and proofing process from the marketing department.
The authors currently recognize the following months:
February-Black History Month; March-National Women’s History Month; April-Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah); May-National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; June-LGBT Pride Month and Juneteenth; July-“National Disability Independence Day”; August-International Day of the World’s Indigenous People; September- Hispanic Heritage Month; October-World Mental Health Day; and November-National Native American Heritage Month.
To date, 13 attorneys have written biographies on 17 patent owners who have represented diverse communities and contributed inventions as scientists, engineers, and inventors. The website has attracted attention as the series gains traction, with Google page views increasing each month. A Google “pageview” report on the firm’s diversity and inclusion website landing pages show 4,466 page views and 3,469 unique page views, which amounts to 4.11% and 3.79% of total website traffic from February 1, 2021-July 22, 2022. The firm leverages the Diversity & Inclusion Spotlight with a press release on the firm’s website news landing page and posts via the firm’s LinkedIn and Twitter accounts.
