About R. Willets Ely (Will Ely)
Will Ely focuses on patent litigation, copyrights, trademarks, transactions, and licensing. He leverages his background and experience in computer science, energy, and environmental law to find successful results.

Will has assisted clients with patent litigation and transactions for medical devices, pharmaceuticals, investments, and telecommunications technologies. Will is a resourceful researcher and has experience with all stages of litigation.

Before attending law school, Will was a highly regarded paralegal at a New York City law firm, where he confirmed his desire to get his law degree. His active litigation experience included case and document management, motion practice, brief drafting, and trial support and management. He regularly summarized briefs and court decisions for partners, worked several trials, including a nine-week jury trial, and supervised paralegal teams working on complex matters, including an insurance dispute involving events and documents from the 1890s through the early 2000s. During his time as a paralegal, Will often worked with the patent team and gained valuable experience with Hatch-Waxman litigation.

Will received his JD from the University of Minnesota Law School, cum laude, and was managing editor of the Minnesota Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, where he majored in Computer Science.

He is an author for the firm’s award-winning “Inventor Spotlight,” which highlights inventors who have impacted our society due to their innovations. Will also writes regularly on the firm’s ANDA Litigation blog about technology and cases relevant to ANDA litigation.

When not working, Will enjoys enthusiastically (if not skillfully) climbing at his local bouldering gym, enthusiastically (if not skillfully) playing chess, and reading science fiction. He also enjoys Formula 1 racing and is a lifelong Buffalo Bills fan.
