Carlson Caspers won a significant victory on behalf of its client AGA Medical Corporation (now owned by St. Jude Medical, Inc.) in a major decision handed down by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In its ruling in Regents of the University of Minnesota v. AGA Medical Corp., No. 2012-1167 (Fed. Cir. June 3, 2013), the Federal Circuit affirmed the decision of the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, which granted summary judgment in favor of AGA of non-infringement and invalidity on the patents asserted by the University of Minnesota. The decision clears the way for St. Jude Medical to continue marketing the device, which has been used successfully in thousands of patients to repair septal defects by blocking holes in the muscle and tissues that separate chambers of the heart.
